El Corazón

Description

El Corazón 4.786 masl

El Corazón (heart) It is named as such, because the two gullies on the north west slopes which, when seen from the distance, appear to join together in the shape of a heart.  This volcano is eroded and extinct and it is located about 35 km southwest of Quito in the “Illinizas Ecological Reserve”.  The ascent is an easy hike but arduous, through the paramo vegetation and before the summit, becomes a bit of difficult; a class 3 rocky climb of approximately 80 m. needs to be negotiated.  At this high 4786 masl and on a clear day you may see the  “Avenue of the Volcanoes”: El Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Ilinizas and Antisana.  Climbing the Corazón is a perfect acclimatized peak to climb to, in preparation for a higher altitudes (above 5000/6000 masl) for a first approach to altitude.  An interest data is that pre-conquest ruins have been reported on the northeast slopes.  They are very overgrown and yet, they need to be studied more.

The weather in the area is very unpredictable and you must be prepared with warm clothing, and waterproof protection.
