Cotopaxi National Park

This high plateau embellished with volcanic scenery is the home of the Andean Condor, deers and many other endemic animals that hide in its mountains, valleys and lakes above 3,500 meters above sea level. For experienced and adrenaline driven hikers that enjoy challenging the heights and the cold weather, this is the ideal place to choose.

Trekking the Cotopaxi (3.500m) / 3 days

Day 1: Our meeting point will be a location previously selected in Quito; we will then head south through the Pan-American’ Highway until the small town of Machachi where we will detour on a dirt road for about 2 hours until reaching the “Pedregal” at 3,500 meters above sea level. This is where our adventure begins… during the trip you will be able to see magnificent volcanoes and mountains such as the Cotopaxi, the Pasochoa , the Rumiñahui all in a context of nature, pure cold air, local indigenous communities and Andean flora and fauna. The entire journey to our camping spot in the north entrance of the Cotopaxi National park should take us about 4 hours.

Day 2: After having breakfast we will start to hike from the heart of the National Park up to Limpiopungo Lake. In the way you will admire magical volcanoes, typical endemic flora and fauna, the Pre- Incan fortress of “El Pucará del Salitre” that served as a viewing point and strategic military spot, springs and small hills. It normally takes us 6 hours to reach Limpiopungo Lake, and the terrain is fairly flat.

Day 3: Our driver will take us all the way up to the parking lot at about 4,500 meters above sea level; here we will start our hike up to the José Rivas Refugee located at 4,800 meters. This hike takes about an hour and our team will be waiting for us with a hot cup of cocoa. We will take some time to rest to then continue to one of the volcano’s glacier at 5,000 mts; you will have enough time to rest and take amazing photographs. Then, it’s back to the parking lot and on to Quito.

El Condor (3.400m-4.500m) / 4 Days

Day 1: We will meet in Quito and immediately head east to the small village of “El Tambo” (3,400m) and there, along with our mules, luggage and skinners, our adventure will begin. We will travel through a muddy and somewhat slippery path, for this reason, we recommend you to use rubber boots. It will take us about 5 hours to reach our first campsite at the shores of the volcanic lake at 3,800 meters above sea level.

Day 2: After having a good and complete breakfast we will take off on a hike along a steep and muddy trail to reach a dryer path where you will be able to admire the Antisana Volcano, the Santa Lucía Lake and the high plateaus.  It will take us 6 hours to reach our second camping site that will be at 4,300 meters above sea level. This will be our home for the night.

Day 3: Our morning will start at 8am; right after breakfast we will hike to the base of the Antisana volcano where we will be likely to see the Ecuadorian emblematic bird, the Condor among many other bird species in the area. After passing through a steep trail and completing the 7 hour hike scheduled for that day, we will arrive to our third camping spot where we will spend our last night.

Day 4: Our hike will start very early in the morning, again, there will be some steep paths before we reach the highest trekking point at 4,500 meters above sea level. We will then descent along the ladders of the Sincholagua volcano until we reach the Pita River inside the Cotopaxi National Park; here our driver will be waiting for us to take us back to Quito.

Sangay Volcano (5.230m) / 7 Days

Day 1: Quito – Guarguallá chico
Our team will meet with you early in the morning in a pre-set location in Quito; our driver will then take us south through the Avenue of Volcanoes passed the city of Riobamba and on to the small village of Guarguallá chico. This day will be mostly making our way south into the country, about 6 hours from Quito to our resting point in the house of one of our porters that will be kind enough to receive us.

Day 2: Guarguallá Chico – Ladder camping site
Our adventure starts with a good and substantial breakfast that guarantees us enough energy for today`s journey. We will leave the house with our mules and luggage and head up to the second camping spot called “Escaleras” or ladders. On the way we will be able to admire the simple lifestyle of the indigenous communities that have settled in these lands; we will walk by rivers and steep roads.. It will take us about 8 hours to reach our destination and we highly recommend you to bring rubber boots for this excursion.

Day 3: Plazapamba Camp site
This day we will go from the Escaleras to the Plazapamba camping site; it’s an 8 hour excursion that will lead us through mud paths, steep trails and rivers. During the hike you will be able to admire the Andean wildlife like the tapir, dantas (another form of tapir) and even pumas.

Day 4: Playas Camp site
Our day will start early in the morning with a complete breakfast, afterwards we will head to the Playas camping spot that is 8 hours from our departure point. We will walk along the typical Amazonian vegetation and it is likely that we will be able to observe the Sangay volcano during our hike. We will install our camping site at 3,700 meters above sea level, a perfect place to rest and get ready for the next day.

Day 5: Sangay volcano
At midnight you will receive a wake up call from our team that will already be waiting for you with a good breakfast to start the day. Making it to the summit of this amazing volcano can easily take 7 hours and there is no guarantee we will actually be able to make it to the top due to weather conditions and volcanic activity. Sometimes rocks detach from the mountain making it impossible to cross over but we will definitely make it to one of the ridges where you will be able to see lava and ashes during the eruptions. Descending back to camp will take us 3 hours in total.

Day 6: Ladder Camp site
We will return along the same path we came from. Again, this excursion may take us 8 hours and we again advise to bring rubber boots along.

Day 7: Guarguallá Chico
This tour ends with one last hike back to Guarguallá Chico, our departure point; here our transportation will be expecting us to bring us back to Quito.
